In spite of valiant efforts to prepare for inclement weather, St. Susan Center's Empty Bowl Lunch in Bemus had to be canceled today. The new date has not yet been set, but all soup vendors and both bands have said that they will participate at the new time. Hope Fights Hunger

Everywhere you look you see signs of a troubled economy and everywhere you go you hear about the financial challenges people are facing. But, if you look in the right places, you will also see signs of hope. In Southern Chautauqua County hope comes in the form of music, dance, and voice and an afternoon of entertainment provided by local students. It’s Notes for Hope 2, a concert to raise money in the fight against hunger. Proceeds will benefit Jamestown’s soup kitchen, St. Susan Center.

On Sunday, May 3, 2009, from 2pm to 4pm, Notes for Hope 2 will be held at the Reg Lenna Civic Center. Featured groups include students from the Drama Enrichment Program, Infinity Program of Chautauqua County, Jamestown High School String Orchestra, Jamestown Suzuki Strings, Southwestern High School Band and special guests. Michele Constantino is program director and Beth Strong is stage manager.

Tickets for the event are $5 and may be purchased at The Reg Lenna Civic Center box office, at any local Jamestown Savings Bank and at St. Susan Center. In addition to great entertainment, Mike Billoni, former Vice President of the Buffalo Bisons, now Marketing and Public Relations Director for the Food Bank of WNY will appear, bringing with him sports memorabilia to be given out during the concert, including an autographed Sabres hockey stick.

“A community with compassion is an eternal source of hope – no matter what challenge we face”, that’s according to Judy Christian, executive director of St. Susan Center. In the first quarter of 2009, the Center’s numbers are up 31%. Family oriented events such as Notes for Hope helps the soup kitchen provide nutritious meals for those in our community who enjoy far too few of them.

Oktoberfest a HUGE success!

The Oktoberfest hosted by Southern Tier Brewing Company, along with Jamestown Awning, Farm Fresh Foods and the Dirty Mountain Band raised $4,256 to help St. Susan Center feed the hungry in our community. The event was a HUGE success.

The weather was "iffy", but a large, heated tent and great beer, brat and music was the perfect combination for more than two hundred people. According to Sara DeMink, who was astounded by the generosity of her customers and employees, "We're definitely going to do this again."

Oktoberfest to benefit St. Susan Center

On Saturday, October 25th, from 3pm to 7pm, Southern Tier Brewing Company in Lakewood will be the site of the first Oktoberfest to benefit St. Susan Center... featuring local beer provided by the brewery; delicious "brat" from Farm Fresh Foods; great music provided by Dirty Mountain Band; and it's all under a tent provided by Jamestown Awning. Just $3 per beer or "brat". Tickets will be available at the door.
As the economy continues to worry us all, let's not forget those who were already struggling just to put food on the table. The number of people being served at the soup kitchen is up 27% this year; more than 97,500 meals were served by the end of September. This event will help St. Susan Center continue to provide nutritious meals to Jamestown's neighbors in need AND it's a great way to celebrate the wonderful fall season and the generosity of this community!

Vullo's Restaurant Hosts Benefit Dinner for St. Susan Center

It's Charlie Vullo's third year hosting a benefit dinner for St. Susan Center at his restaurant famous for authentic and innovative Italian cooking. On Sunday, September 28th, beginning with a cash bar at 4pm, followed by dinner at 5pm, the chef will pull out all the stops to raise funds for Jamestown's soup kitchen.

Dinner will feature salmon, prime rib and chicken on every plate and guests will be entertained with music provided by Razz & Friends. Tickets are $20 and every penny goes to the Center! Reservations are necessary and must be received by noon on Monday, September 22nd.

This is a difficult time of year for St. Susan Center, as the mail seems to bring mostly bills and few donations. Everyone's feeling the pinch these days and a fun night out for a worthy cause may be just the ticket!

Empty Bowl Lunch Fills a Special Need

The name of the event may not sound appetizing, but the Saturday, July 19^th event in Bemus Point is just the ticket for satisfying the nutritional needs of many who might otherwise go hungry. The Empty Bowl Lunch is a fundraiser for St. Susan Center, sponsored by the Italian Fisherman, Bemus Point Pottery and the Pepsi Bottling Company.

The Empty Bowl Lunch will feature specialty soups and breads from local restaurants, caterers and stores; beverages from Pepsi; great bluegrass music by Wind River; a 20% discount in six Bemus Point shops for those who support the event; three Chinese auction prizes ranging in value from $155 to $815, Busti Cider Mill will host a farmer's market, and the bowls themselves are gifts from potters, artists, youth groups, seniors, crafters and novices throughout the region. The cost for all of this is $15 per person and you get to keep the bowl! Lunch for children who don’t need a bowl costs just $5.

“Similar events have been held in other cities and states across the country,” explains Dan Dalpra, co-sponsor of the event, “and we have the perfect set-up for it in Bemus. The idea is to engage our tourist visitors and long time friends of St. Susan Center in a common, fun activity with a positive outcome for everyone.”

The Empty Bowl Lunch will run from 11am to 2pm. “But you’ll want to come early, advises Judy Christian, the soup kitchen’s executive director, “to pick out your bowl from the hundreds that will be displayed and you won’t want to miss out on the great soups being served.” Tickets are available at St. Susan Center, the Italian Fisherman, Bemus Point Pottery, Webb’s Captain’s Table, Roberto’s, and at Jamestown Savings Bank in Mayville. Notes for Hope

It is no secret that our community faces increasing economic challenges. It is nowhere more evident than at St. Susan Center, where we continue to feed a growing number of people in distress. Still, our community responds to our neighbors in need and that is reason for hope.

On Sunday, May 18th, from 4pm-6pm at the Reg Lenna Civic Center, we will celebrate Notes for Hope, a musical compendium performed by our youth to raise funds and awareness to fight hunger. This two-hour program is packed full of wonderful performances, small groups and large, voice and instrumental, including Jamestown High School, Panama Middle School, Southwestern High School, the Infinity Program the Drama Enrichment Program, Suzuki Strings and more! As we look at all that we face as a community, it is easy to see that the real notes for hope are our children, who can be showcased, unified and empowered through such a cause.

Over the Rainbow was great in spite of the weather!

The weather kept many people away from St. Susan Center's fifth annual basket fair, Over the Rainbow, but it did not prevent many more from attending the fun event. More than 250 people showed up at Chautauqua Suites and enjoyed a great lunch provided by Olives, an afternoon of fabulous prize winning and were able to leave before the roads were too bad to get safely home.

Of the ninety more who knew they would not be able to attend the event and purchased tickets to be placed in absentia, many received welcome calls on Monday informing them that they had won. All told, the event involved donations from more than 150 individuals and businesses, nearly 350 drawing participants and many volunteers who set the stage and kept things moving throughout the day. The net proceeds is not yet known, but it is over $3,500, better than any previous basket fair.

The presentation everyone waited for anxiously was the drawing of the name of the person who won the autographed Ryan Miller Sabres jersey. When the name of 10 year old Ryan Gustafson was announced by emcee Dennis Webster of WJTN and Media One Group, the entire place stood and applauded. The look on his face was priceless, as was his prize.

All in all, it was a memorable event, says St. Susan Centers executive director Judy Christian, exceeding all expectations. And, it is one we look forward to repeating next year, in the same place, but a little bit later on the calendar. The staff at Chautauqua Suites did everything possible to make our event a success and that was evident throughout the day!

Proceeds will be used to buy food for the growing number of individuals who seek help from the Jamestown soup kitchen each day. Last year that number exceeded 106,000.

Over the Rainbow

You know the place, where your dreams come true. You never know when or where it will appear. Until now, that is. On Saturday, March 8^th, 2008, from noon - 3:30 pm the rainbow ends at Chautauqua Suites in Mayville, complete with dreams come true for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, families, Easter, those who love to dine out, green thumbs, the home, the car, the crafty, sports fans and just for fun. There’s even a pot of gold!

St Susans Fifth Annual Basket Fair and it is affordable fun for the whole family (just $5 per envelope of 14 tickets). There will be basket prizes and door prizes and grand prizes, including an autographed Ryan Miller Sabres jersey. A sandwich buffet will be provided by Olives for $6 per person pre-sale or $7.50 at the door and group tables may be reserved.

Proceeds support St. Susan Centers mission to provide food, fellowship, dignity and respect to all who are in need. ST. SUSAN CENTER TO CELEBRATE FIRST FOUNDERS’ FEAST

February 1, 2008, marks the beginning of St. Susan Centers twenty-fifth year of service to the Greater Jamestown Community. It is not the date, but what it represents that is significant. In twenty-four years, St. Susan Center has served more than one and a quarter million meals, provided a safe haven for our neighbors who face unthinkable challenges, shared comfort and information with all who walked through our doors, and helped unify a community in compassionate caring.

Such a milestone cannot pass without honoring and remembering all who have made this service possible, from the Tornabene family who gave the first precious gift to the media who helped us share Susan’s story, from community leaders who helped guide our steps to volunteers and donors who provided the means to deliver our promise.
St. Susan Center has always been the result of the community effort, beginning with the founding clergy who opened our doors on February 1, 1984:
